Day One

We split into our different groups today. Unfortunately, I am not with my friends, or any friends for that matter. In my sailing group are Chyan, Isaiah, Chienne, Inalen, and me. We didn't get onto the boats right away: first we talked about the parts of the boat. Most of which I knew because I have been sailing before with my Mom and some friends of ours. After we went over the parts of the boats, we went over coming about - which is when you turn the boat into the wind so that the wind goes on the opposite side of the boat. We went out on to the boats after that and tried to sail the boat around in the Hudson River. We failed so many times, forcing our instructor and his intern to help us.

Matthew's Biography

My name is Matthew Pressman. I am 13 years old and was born in New York City where I currently live. I attend Church Farm School, a boarding school in Exton Pennsylvania. My interests include singing, biking, reading (when there is a good book to read), and going on the computer.

Two of my greatest interests - I would go so far as to say they are passions of mine - are Philosophy and Ethics. The reason I did not include this interest with the others is that I hold Philosophy and Ethics on a completely different level than the others. Philosophy and Ethics are the most interesting subjects there are, but that doesn't change the fact that they are very difficult subjects to be interested in. I find these subjects are ever changing because there is always a new way to look at the problems or dilemmas.

I would say that the most relevant and important thing that makes me interesting is the strange way I look at problems, dilemmas, or even the world and the situations we face each day. One thing I can say, is that the way I look at the world may not always be apparent or easy to understand, but for me it makes perfect sense. Here is one example of the way I look at things. Most people in the world, or even in your own town, can be sorted into groups of different types of people; I am not saying that I am an exception to this. On the contrary, I am saying that I can be placed into a group like anyone else, but the group I am stacked into is one of the strange ones. Most people in the world strive for individualism, but within those terms everybody is still in a group of the same type of people. Even if we are each our own person, the same types of people pop up all over the place. Ultimately, I can only say that the way I look at the world is one reason I can be categorized into one of the "bizarre" or "weird" groups of people.

Usually in my spare time, I watch old television shows on the computer, which distracts me from being a boring lump all of the time (but that still happens). My favorite science fiction television series, that I am currently in the middle of, is Stargate SG-1. In my opinion, it is a more advanced looking "Star Trek." My favorite Television series of all time is an anime series, which I can't remember the name of. My favorite two movies of all time are "The Notebook" and "Reign Over Me." There are no movies that can compare to them in any way.

Music is one subject I cannot ignore. I have saved this subject for last because all through my life - and others' lives - music stays steady playing in the background harmoniously sweeping between notes. My favorite genre is rock through and through. I do like rap but mostly old school rap that is real poetry instead of just being about sex, girls and money. Punk rock, metal, and rock n' roll are my favorite types of rock. I think that the reason I like rock so much more than the other genres is because almost every rock song tells a story about how the artist felt at the time that they wrote the song. This makes it easier to relate to it. That may also be the reason I like old school rap instead of newer rap.
