Animals
Animals and insects- don’t even get me started!! This was probably the downfall of the trip excluding the pouring rain everyday! The mosquitoes were really the pain! They were literally everywhere. Some people got bit more than others. For some, none whatsoever! They were in the tents, in the van, of course on the outside and it was horrible. I got bit so many times. Twenty-two times in one night on the same arm!! I didn’t think that was possible but since it happened to me I guess it was.
Another pain was the daddy long legs!! As everyone knows these are spiders with the smallest little bodies and the longest legs ever. Good thing they don’t bite but they are very creepy and crawl their little bodies in every little place possible. My hair, my sleeping bag, and even in my shoe! I couldn’t take it anymore.
This wasn’t really a problem but it was something important to check for. I was the only one on the trip who received one. It’s called a dog tick. Its specifically called a wood tick associated with the fatal disease Lyme Disease. I had one on my leg. And I didn’t feel it whatsoever. The tick hadn’t been on me for more than about two to three hours. Maybe even more. But luckily not more than twenty-four hours. After that much time, a tick will get full from the blood it has drank and regurgitate a little. This is when the viruses and diseases are transmitted. After I found it I decided to have the counselor explain to the group about what a tick was and what it does and how to do tick checks for one another.
The animals were something also. We didn’t see as many as we thought we would see but we did here bull frogs. A couple of people saw them. But the sound from far away sounded so much like a bear and the girl’s tent was the closest to it. We were so scared to go to sleep because we thought it was a bear. Soon we found out that the sound was from a bullfrog. We also saw a moose. We were riding down the road and there were maybe 20-25 cars backed up. We stopped to see what all the commotion was about and to our surprise there was a moose traveling into the woods. It had crossed the road. Everyone was taking pictures and was so in shock. It was pretty cool. An experience we will never forget.
