The day before we left, we had a closing banquet. It was similar to the opening banquet except we were now all a family. We arrived at around 6:30 and while we were waiting for dinner to start, we saw a slide show of some recent pictures taken throughout the trip. It was emotional because we were happy to have surpassed all the obstacles we overcame throughout the program, but at the same time we were sad because it was our last night all together before we left. We didn’t want to leave. The food served that night was even better than that of the opening banquet. The dessert was so good. We had a new Dj, which many participants new from the winter program. He played great music and got the party started. The facilitators performed a dance to Feedback by Janet Jackson. We were shocked because even though they were like our parents, they showed us that they could still have fun and party. After their dance, everyone was on the dance floor. We experienced so much throughout the program that this was our time to enjoy ourselves with our newly formed family. Even Barbara, one of the participants, was having too much fun. It was nice to see everyone come out their shells and let loose. At the end we formed two circles. The peer counselors, the group leaders, staff, and facilitators were in the inner circle while the outer circle had the participants. We went around thanking everyone, but with our eyes. Nearly everyone started crying because we realized that we probably weren’t going to see each other ever again. These were people we learned to trust and had become so close to in such a short period of time. Even though tears went through many of our eyes, we took many pictures in order for us to never forget the experience and the bonds we made. It definitely was a great way to end the program.
