Dirty Cleaning

"Dirty cleaning", a paradox of a situation you do NOT want to experience. When camping in the woods it is unsafe to clean your dishes as you would normally. Remnants from your meal can and will attract bears. This is why it's essential to not leave food particles on the ground. So, if not on the ground, where do they go? That's a question bearing a very disturbing answer. It involves filling your bowl/container with water and cleaning it in a manner that makes your bowl your sink as well. The bad thing is that you can't just dump the water since it now has the odor of the food that was in it. You can't throw it away-so you drink it. This manner of cleaning can get dirty and maybe upsetting depending on the contents. Pesto is a great example of when this becomes nauseating. The smell of pesto is unbearable and the taste is worse. In order to clean the pot, you need a water source and pine cones/leaves which serve as an alternative for your cleaning sponge. I'll tell you right now. It does not leave your hand feeling soft and younger. So remember to always do your dirty cleaning, it's essential if you want to avoid being eaten.

Leave No Trace

"Leave no trace", the first law of backpacking that should be set in stone. What this rule basically asks for is for the camper to leave the campsite the way he/she found it if not better. Camping in nature can be a wonderful experience. Camping in a nature altered by trash and other unnatural substances greatly reduce this wonder. It is important to respect the trail and all around it in order to preserve the beauty for future hikers and campers. Breaking branches/trees, littering, high impact tent locations and causing harm to animals add a repulsive look and feel to somewhere left untouched by the strains of modern life. It defeats the purpose of actually being in nature and experiencing the tranquility. So, on a final note, take only pictures and for the sake of preserving something we can all escape to, leave no trace.

The Poop Kit

The poop kit is what we used to go to the bathroom. It contained a trowel to dig a hole in the ground if we had to go bad and hand sanitizer. The hand sanitizer was to clean your hands because of germs. We also had toilet paper. We'll Kelly asked me to write more about the poop kit with the wrong tone but the rest of the group asked me NICELY. One of our instructors named homer had told us about the 5 star dumps that was mainly about finding comfortable places in the woods to take a dump 1 is the lowest and 5 is the highest.
