Today we started at Piermont where we spent the night. We woke up early in the morning around 6 a.m. Before we left Piermont, like always we had to ship shape the boat, get the plans for the day and navigation plans ( place where we where headed to). Tijger and Onrust left the Piermont docks at 8:00 am. The reason why we need to wake up so early was because we had to cath the flood. This made it easier for both vessel to travel. Today was the first day in which we got hands on tacking. It took us a couple of tacks before we got across the Tapppanze bridge, The View From the vessel were amazing, the bridge was so huge and so high up. Not just that , the Tappanzee is the longest bridge in the Hudson. Soon after both vessels passed the Tappanze bridge it seem like a different world because almost everybody in the crew was getting sick. That day the current was strong, big winds and big waves which had a lot of impact on our health. Dwight, Dominique, Jesus, and Erika from the Tijger crew got sea sick; in the Onrust crew Ashley, Matthew and Julian got sea sick. Sailing those vessel in that condition was not a good experience, is like having a feeling that your are dizzy, wanting to puke and having to sail a complicated boat. Now you try doing that for a change. Early in the afternoon both Vessel passed Sing Sing Prison which is a maximized prison and docked at Ossining just to get everyone back on track and off the boat s because it had been a roughed sailing. When we got to Ossining people had the decision to the bathroom, just go on land to relax or get pills for sea sickness. The relaxation period did not last for long and we were off for another softer sailing ride. We took off and rowed to Croton Point Onrust had the easier way there. The Onrust crew got to Croton Point first, The tiger crew in the other hand was having problems getting to Croton Point , because they were trying to sail but the wind would just them side to side, the Tijger crew was frustrated because they weren't where they need to be faster than expected. Finally after 30 minutes of trying to sail the Tijger crew got there ideas together and decided to row all the way to Croton Point where the Onrust crew waited. Once the Tijger crew got together with the Onrust they both went for swim to refresh our minds and bodies of so much work. After having fun in such a nice temperature water, everyone one at a time got back in the boat. Getting back into the vessel from the water was a challenge for most. Everyone dried off and changed into dry cloths and got ready to sail again. Sailing that evening was very difficult for the Tijger crew because the sprit slide through the mast knot 4 times. That was provably the out difficult part of the day for the Tijger crew because they had to take down the sprit four times while still trying to go against the rough waves. It was like getting on a roller coaster ride trying to fix a huge pole, and that my friends takes a lot of strength. Jesus and Kelly went up the main mast along with Coyote to fix the problem. That experience was funny because Jesus had to tie himself to the haliard, if not he would had flown out of the Vessel because of the rough weather, Kelly in the hand was holding on to the sprit while it was being fixed she almost flew of the Vessel and if wouldn't have been for Jesus and his smart idea of tying himself to the haler they both would have gone over board, the whole expedition would have came to a complete stop. After successfully putting up the sprit the Tijger crew go back on to sailing. The sunset that evening was beautiful. The skies were orange, blue and a light touch of yellow making it an amazing sunset. Like always before we docked we had to put down the main mast and the jib so that when the boats got close to shore no winds would come as a surprise and fling people over or take us off course. So the Tijger crew rowed to the Croton yacht club were pasta was made for dinner and thanks to the people from the Croton yacht club both crews got to wash dishes use the bathroom, freshen up and go to sleep under a nice star full sky. |
