BUG-BITE

Hey! My name is Julian Flores I come from the Bronx, and I went on the New York City Outward-bound Wilderness course. It stated when my mom got this camp interactive flyer and wanted to send me away for two weeks I didnāt really want to but I agreed anyway I donāt know why I did, but it was a good way to get away from home. I went on the trip and did a lot of things!

I would have to say the most challenging part of the trip is hiking. Hiking was the most challenging because of the trails there some trails that you could just keep going non-stop but then theyāre some of those trails that you would have to stop a million times just for some water and a quick rest. During those non-stop hikes you just think so much that if you think any more your head will explode. During those (stop a million times) hikes you think if youāre going to make it trough the day. Even though your hiking your like in a whole new world with more than a thousand thoughts in your head. A world that breaks up into thoughts about things that happened in the past like when you played with your little sister or when you met your girlfriend. Also things in the future like how big your sister will be when you get back you even think how you will look when the trip is all over. You think about so many things that you actually think your going crazy.

What I learned about myself is no matter how scared I am I never give up! I face my challenges, when I was rock climbing I said Iām never going to repel because I was scared but those guys talked to me and said all I have to do is take those 3 steps off the rock ledge and I could go back and I accomplished what I had to. I did that but I did not go back up I said to myself why go back up when I could just go the rest of the way and prove to myself that I can do that so I kept on going and completed repelling. I was at the bottom and I looked up to the rock and said I did it thatās when I realized that no matter how scared I am I never give up. I was only scared rock climbing but I took deep breathes and got through it.

Working with others was cool since more than half of my group left. I got to get closer to the 2 that did not leave. Working as a group for us was very easy since there was only 3 of us. Being apart of a group taught me to work better as a team. It taught me that there is no one person team because T-E-A-M belongs together.

Away from home was painful, thinking of family and people you see every day.   Thinking of your sister, father, mother, cousin, loved, one, brother, even friends.  Itās hard, but you realize that youāll eventually see them when you get back.  Thatās what keeps you on track.  Its amazing that you love someone so much that you would do or think anything for them.
From being outdoors I learned that I is true that ćto accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but believe.ä

To me, the most fun was the canoeing.  I learned how to paddle the canoe in the water, how to turn and go back.  Just the way of being on water and being away from everyone else is cool.  It is fun because each day you are somewhere new.  The scenery was incredible, especially when we went into Racquette River.   We had to stop by this waterfall and do a portage that was 1.25 miles.  After we camped out and unpacked all that stuff we passed by and saw a waterfall.  It was real nice.  It is fun being on water in the canoe or even a boat, because you see lots of different things and when those breezes hit you and crawl down your back and you tingle with enjoyment.

We visited this retirement home and visited a lot of elderly people.  I played games with them and they won.  They were so cool.  I talked to some of them and they told me about their life. I remember some of their names: Betty, Margaret, June, Capp, and Ruth.  To me they were the coolest people in the Adirondacks.  I had fun talking to them and if it was up to me, I would have stayed there the whole two weeks.

The funniest part of the trip was when we were at Oxeshoe pond and we had to do a solo.  We stood under a tarp all night.  And we were going crazy singing and screaming.  When we got up in the morning, it was about 6 a.m. and one of the group members, Jesus, was tangled in his shirt and we couldnāt see his head.  He was all backwards and he kept on tripping and almost fell.

To me this trip was a great experience. Doing all the things we did was cool. I proved that I could do things that I never imagined of doing. People that need to get away from home this is a good way of getting out. With Outward Bound I think we can accomplish a lot in our lives. I would just like to thank every body that helped me during this course and a special thanks to Adam.  who talked to me when i was scared ,he helped a lot without him i would not have overcome that fear.So Adam THANKS!
