About CampInteractive: What do high-risk kids and technology have in common? Usually nothing. This is why CampInteractive exists. The program bridges the digital and leadership divide by introducing the creative power of technology and the inspiration of the outdoors to underprivileged youth in one program. During the summer, the kids go camping, making sure to record their thoughts in ink or via donated digital technology. When they come back to the city, they take web design and development classes to produce a work about their experience. In this sense, the kids navigate two different adventures — into the wild and onto the web. The end result is sense of innovation, teamwork and confidence that will vault them to the forefront of their generation. Student profile: 13-17 yr olds considered high-risk - high risk of not succeeding, that is. We work with the kids in the "middle" - they are neither the kids with a perfect 1600 on their SATs, nor are they the kids likely to join a gang. CampInteractive kids are those who, if they had grown up in middle America, would have a home computer and go to college. Location: The organization's offices and student center (Tech and Trek) is located in the Bronx. The space provides access to both high tech and a safe place for the kids throughout the year. Programs: Unique combination of outdoor activities to build self esteem and education to build skills. Summer programs range from camping in South Dakota to weekend hiking trips to New Jersey. Each kid is given a digital camera to document the experience. Upon return, the students are enrolled in summer technology sessions to learn web design and development using the digital assets. During the winter, the Tech and Trek center is open after school and on Saturdays to provide additional tutoring and education. Students also participate in skiing and ice skating events during the winter.
